Pokémon GO fans have been speculating that Niantic may use the upcoming Halloween event to launch Gen 3, and now that’s been confirmed according to new wallpaper art from the game.
Extracted via a datamine of the most recent patch, the art shows a number of Gen 3 Pokémon that are going to be part of a “Lavender Town” themed Pokémon GO Halloween event that should be announced shortly.
The Gen 3 Pokémon featured in the artwork are:
Two of those are in the same family (Duskull evolves into Dusclops, Snuppet evolves into Bannette), so that’s three trees total from what we can tell here. Despite the hype about Gen 3 arriving in the Halloween event, what we do not know is if it’s the full roster of Gen 3 Pokémon, or maybe just a “spooky” selection instead.
Gen 2 had a soft-launch when the babies arrived well before the full launch of all the rest of the Pokémon. That wasn’t terribly well-received by the community, but it’s possible that might be the case here. Niantic may have learned their lesson, and we might be getting a full-on Gen 3 launch after all. Still, it’s too early to say. The recent datamine says that more or less all the Gen 3 data has been put into the game at this point, so it’s just a matter of Niantic pulling the trigger.
Gen 3 will dump a lot of new Pokémon into the game, more than Gen 2 did, and arguably a better batch with more well-designed original Pokémon that have fewer standalones and no evolutions of Gen 1 or 2 Pokémon. There’s a lot of original stuff in there, and I have to believe that it’s going to inject some much-needed life into the game for a while, even if other issues with GO remain.
I just don’t know if Niantic will do the full launch for Halloween or not. Last year, Gen 2 was its own separate launch, not directly tied to a holiday, so I can see this as a hype-generator with a few Pokémon, then Gen 3 is released later in November or December complete with raid boss rotations and other changes, which is what I originally predicted. Or I may be totally off-base and Niantic recognizes that what the game needs right this second is way, way more Pokémon for players to catch in the wild before it starts getting totally freezing in their region.
Given that all of this is leaking right now, I would expect some official confirmation about the Halloween event, and what exactly it will contain, in short order here. They can only let speculation run wild for so long before they confirm that A) only a few Gen 3 Pokémon are showing up early or B) this is a full-on Gen 3 launch, which are two very different things.
Gen 3 aside, I like the “Lavender Town” theme of the event, and the datamine shows that the famous musical score from the city will be working its way into the game for the holiday, which has stayed with me since I was a kid.
As for Gen 3, it’s coming, in some capacity, that much is clear, but hopefully we’ll learn more about the scope of the launch soon enough.
