The first of three major Pokémon GO events is going on now, a Safari Zone in Dortmund, Germany this is proving so popular that surprise, it’s crashing the game like it’s Pokémon GO Fest 2017 all over again. A friendly tip if your there is not to use Incense, as that appears to be a crash trigger that will break your game and not let you in.
This event is part of Pokémon GO’s months-long Global Research Challenge where during each of these events, players are tasked with objectives both locally at these events, and globally, to try and unlock prizes.
The Dortmund crowd and the Asia-Pacific region have already done their part. The Safari Zone attendees completed 50,000 research tasks between them, which has unlocked 3x catch XP globally. In Asia, players have already complete 5 million research tasks which have made luck eggs last for one hour.
Now, it’s America’s turn. Well, the Americas. If you live in North, South or Central America, and are just waking up now, it’s time to get hunting and complete research tasks of your own. We are also required to complete 5 million tasks ourselves, and in a game with 145 million active players, that should not be that difficult. Asia practically hit their goal in half an hour. If less than 5% of the playerbase even does one research task, we should hit all these goals globally. So do your part today. If The Americas hit their goal, that’s bonus hatch XP. If Europe/Africa hit it, it’s bonus raid XP.
What’s the ultimate goal of all these objectives? That would be a grand unlock on July 7, one that Niantic has apparently already revealed, despite players not hitting all the goals yet.
From what I can tell, the prize for July 7 if all goals are met is the return of Articuno as a raid boss for a three hour window. During this window, Articuno will also have a chance to be shiny.
That sounds a little bit lame on the surface, but given how Pokémon GO Community Day works with its 3 hour super-spawns, my guess is that we could see something extreme like all raids being Articunos for that three hour window, and the chance at being shiny dramatically increased from what it is normally. If so, that would actually be a pretty decent prize. And if this is the unlock, my guess is that the other two unlocks for GO Fest in Chicago and the other Safari Zone in Japan are going to be Zapdos and Moltres and their shiny forms. Not sure what the “ultra” unlock will be at the end of this. Shiny…Mewtwo?
I hope the server issues are resolved in Dortmund so players there can continue to enjoy the event. Here in America, it’s time to get to work to make sure we unlock this Articuno, but honestly, I don’t think it’s going to be terribly difficult. Happy hunting.
