THE company behind the once hugely popular Pokemon Go game is working on a new smartphone-based game it hopes can captivate the public in the same crazy fashion.
Niantic Labs says it’s working on a similar augmented reality (AR) game based on the beloved Harry Potter franchise.
After the crazy success of Pokemon Go — which grew into a global phenomenon last year before users significantly dropped off — many predicted it would spawn a series of copycat AR games. There has previously been rumours that Niantic were developing an AR Harry Potter game but the rumours were dismissed as untrue.
Well, apparently not.
After first being reported by TechCrunch, Niantic confirmed it was working on a Harry Potter game in a blog post last week.
It’s called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and will require gamers to “learn spells, explore their real world neighbourhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”
It’s unlikely it will become the traffic stopping, park clogging, public nuisance that Pokemon Go became due its immense popularity, but news of the impending game has been met with excitement by fans online.
