Taiwanese singer-actress Cyndi Wang, who is known for her sweet and fresh-faced image, has refuted plastic surgery rumours after photos of the 36-year-old appearing “stiff-looking” at an event in Beijing, China, on Tuesday (March 26), made the rounds online.
Many netizens who shared the pictures, which showed Cyndi looking virtually unrecognisable with a swollen face and lips, expressed surprise at her changed looks, speculating that she "must have gone under the knife". The pictures caused much discussion online, and soon shot to the top of Weibo’s trending searches.
A netizen shared that Cyndi once suffered from cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection which causes the skin on the affected area to appear swollen and red, theorising that the infection might have been the reason for Cyndi’s changed looks.
Yesterday, the singer-actress’s management agency released a statement to address the reports.
“Our artiste Cyndi Wang made an appearance at a promotional event yesterday. However, an anonymous user has deliberately picked photos taken at an unflattering angle to disseminate to the public. We suspect that the user has also digitally edited the photo, adding harmful commentary. This has negatively impacted the name of our artiste,” the statement read. They also shared the unedited version of the pictures in their post.
“We request that netizens and the media pay attention to the achievements of our artistes, and their musical work (instead), to give Chinese music their biggest support and encouragement. We also request for netizens to be more self-respecting, so as to not be easily swayed by others. We will pursue all untruths and slander to the best of our abilities,” the statement concluded.
