40-year-old Elva Hsiao and her latest squeeze, 24-year-old Justin Huang, have been the talk of the town since they went public with their relationship last August.
Netizens’ discussions have mostly centred around their 16-year age gap, although both Elva and Justin seem to have taken the negative comments in stride.
Elva was a guest on a recent episode of Chinese variety show Roast! — where the guests take turns to roast each other — and Justin showed up as a surprise. Once he went on stage, the roasting began, with the actor quipping: “I’ll just be here for a short while, because I’m worried that she will have a new boyfriend if I stay on stage for too long.”
This was in response to Elva’s earlier revelation that she has dated over a hundred men, and the audience was surprised that Justin was secure enough to talk about his girlfriend's dating history head-on.
“We’ve been together for three years, which is a long time for me. I’m still quite young after all,” he said. He poked fun at their age difference again when he shared a past conversation he had with Elva. “I told her that if I got to know her earlier, I could have been her co-star in the music video for ’The Romance of He & She’ instead of Daniel Wu. After I said that, I realised that it was filmed in 2002, and that I was only seven! I wouldn’t have been able to give her a piggyback ride like Daniel did.”
Justin also revealed that it took some time for him to decide to date Elva. “We’re very different in terms of age and where we are in our respective lives. I thought about it for a long time, but I decided that I shouldn’t put it off any longer. If I waited any longer, she would be too old!”
