Taiwanese actor Ethan Ruan’s relationship with his family has always been a talking point among netizens.
His dad is said to be a soldier, his mother was a military nurse and his brother, a pilot. With a family history so entrenched in the armed forces, many netizens have wondered why the 38-year-old decided on a career path that’s so different.
A recent confession from Ethan on Chinese variety show Nian Nian Tao Hua Yuan may have shed some light on the matter.
Ethan began talking about his family by admitting that he’s estranged from his father. “My dad is the type of person that I dislike the most," he said. "He used the wrong methods to express his love towards us.” Without going into details, Ethan revealed that he found it difficult to talk to his father when he was growing up because of how distant their relationship was.
“A child can never mature if he’s unable to connect with his parents,” Ethan added. “I never want to be like him.”
However, the actor has noticed that he’s becoming more and more like his father when it comes to the way he expresses himself, and feels that this might be his Achilles' heel in the future.
Ethan also talked about his grandfather, and the topic left him visibly emotional.
“I was a very rebellious child. I took a long time to graduate from high school and almost everyone gave up on me," said Ethan. "My grandfather was the only one who was supportive of me. When I first started out in showbiz, there were many times when I couldn’t make ends meet and he would send money to me without telling anyone. I hope he lives a long and healthy life.”
