Fans of Jay Chou would know that the pop king has a very turbulent history with the paparazzi. In addition to being involved in multiple fiery altercations with them (complete with name-calling and rude gestures), he has also released two songs that convey his extreme contempt for them, ‘Surrounded’ and ‘Photo Sticker’.
Well, it looks like the 41-year-old has mellowed a lot over time, perhaps due to age, marriage, or fatherhood (or all of the above). Last Wednesday (Jun 3), Taiwan’s Mirror Media received a tip-off from a reader who had tried to enter a bowling alley in Taipei, only to discover that it was closed to the public as Jay had booked out the entire venue for himself.
Photographers quickly went over to investigate, and sure enough, they managed to catch the singer leaving the place with his wife Hannah Quinlivan and a few friends. And judging from the eye contact in the pictures, it looks like the shutterbugs were spotted as well.
Now, if this had happened about a decade ago, the encounter would probably have resulted in another dramatic clash, which is exactly what happened in 2012 when Apple Daily tried to score shots of Jay with Hannah, whom he hadn’t gone public with at that time.
That incident, arguably one of Jay’s most notorious run-ins with the media, resulted in him getting bashed by both netizens and the press for his hostile behaviour. Besides being accused of hitting a journo, he was also ridiculed and mockingly dubbed “the Emperor” for raging at one of them for calling him by his full name.
It was all just one big mess.
Well, people change, and not even the paps stalking Jay at the bowling alley themselves could have seen what actually happened next. According to the report, Jay walked over to their car, knocked on the window, and gently asked, “Did a member of the public break the news? Did you manage to get your shot?”
Talk about a total change in attitude. We would’ve chalked his good mood up to a triumphant bowling game, but this isn’t the first time he’s shown that he’s turned over a new leaf. A few years ago, he took a group of photogs by surprise when he went up to them and offered them food, so it looks like his days of butting heads with the paparazzi are now over.
