Not too long ago, Mandopop King Jay Chou became the unfortunate target of fat-shaming when photos of him looking a little, um, fluffier than usual were shared online.
Netizens immediately blamed his weight gain on his well-known love for bubble tea and urged him to cut down on the sugary drink, which was something he had supposedly started doing the year before in preparation for his role in the fourth xXx film.
Well, since then, not only has Jay appeared to have picked up healthier drinking habits (he’s usually spotted with a cup of coffee on his socials these days), he’s also apparently been hitting the gym — and the results are showing.
On Monday (Mar 16), the 41-year-old Instagrammed a photo of himself wearing a sleeveless top, along with the caption, “Let’s have a cup of coffee”, which pretty much confirms his conversion from boba. But that wasn’t what people were talking about.
Instead, his jacked arms became a point of discussion among his followers and friends.
Unsurprisingly, the top comment comes from his own wife, Taiwanese-Australian actress Hannah Quinlivan, who wrote: “From Dad bod to Dat bod (sic)”. Then, in an amusing but admirable display of self-confidence, Jay responded, “[I’ve] always had Dat bod (laughing emoji)”.
His celeb pals were impressed as well. “Aiyo, someone’s been working out,” said Vanness Wu, while Wilber Pan dubbed him “the Hulk”. Blackie Chen also marvelled at how “thick” Jay looks.
Fans also couldn’t help but to indulge in a little good-natured teasing of their idol. “Are you sure this isn’t Photoshopped?” quipped one. Naturally, there were jokes about his famous — and former? — favourite beverage too: “So you’re no longer drinking bubble tea? Those muscles are huge!”
This is far from the first time Jay has flaunted such an impressive physique. The singer has bared a chiselled bod plenty of times in the past in his concerts or on photo shoots. So perhaps this peek at his biceps is a teaser for more things to come?
