Mandopop superstar JJ Lin may be a total boss in the recording studio and on stage, but it looks like he is a little, um, lacking in the area of the culinary arts. Hey, nobody’s good at everything, right?
On Thursday (Feb 18), the singer, who flew home to Singapore from Taiwan for Chinese New Year, uploaded a new video of himself making dumplings from scratch with fellow national treasure Stefanie Sun on his YouTube channel.
According to JJ, that was the second time in his life unleashing his inner dumpling chef, and he quipped, “This time, there’s no pressure from dad!”
For those who might’ve missed it, the 39-year-old documented his previous attempt at a similar dish in October 2019, but things didn’t quite turn out the way he wanted as he struggled with folding the ‘wrinkles’ of the goubuli baozi, a traditional steamed bun from China’s Tianjin.
This caused Papa Lin, who was also there, to roast poor JJ with a soul-crushing suggestion: “You should stick to singing. Let other people do this lah.” Burn.
So, have JJ’s dumpling-wrapping skills improved after a year and a half?
Well, he had barely begun working on the first one when Stefanie sniped, “You go and sing ba, you!”, which, in Mandarin, is the exact same phrase that JJ’s dad used. Guess he still has a long way to go, then.
In fact, Stef, who seemed to be doing a much better job, kept hilariously making disapproving comments about JJ like a hard-to-please mother-in-law. “Can you see we’re very, very disastrous?” she exclaimed in English at one point.
After frying the dumplings, JJ and Stef sat down to taste their own handiwork.
Despite the rocky start for JJ, they reported that the dumplings actually tasted pretty good (“Juicy and crispy”, according to Stef), and the pair joked about opening their own restaurant.
And while JJ clearly needs a lot more practice when it comes to the art of making dumplings, viewers were super supportive and left many encouraging comments. “It’s the taste that matters, not the shape. I’m here for you!” wrote one fan, while another said that they would like to order “10 servings”.
