Singaporean national treasure JJ Lin has been nothing but supportive of those working tirelessly to combat the COVID-19 outbreak. Soon after the epidemic started, he and our other national treasure Stefanie Sun released ‘Stay With You’, a track written by the duo to encourage medical personnel working in hospitals that have been hit hard by COVID-19. In particular, a message “There’s no city that’s locked down as long as love remains” was seen as a dedication to Hubei as the province was the first to be locked down in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Since then, the 38-year-old has been lying low after postponing all his performances for the first half of the year in the interest of everyone’s safety and health.

In the meantime, he’s become a trending topic again after appearing in an episode of Chinese talk show Hey My Friend. In that ep, JJ participated in a video call with the host, He Jiong, along with a Wuhan nurse named Qin Lan, who has been working on the frontline since the COVID-19 outbreak began.

She was picked after sending in a video of herself at work, and the host pointed out what she wrote on her protective suit as one of the reasons they decided to call her. Rather than writing her name on her suit, she decided to write a line from JJ’s song, ‘Little Big Us’ on it. The line is loosely translated as ‘I might be small, but I definitely won’t run away’.

When JJ appeared on screen, Qin Lan immediately covered her face as she couldn’t stop herself from crying, and had to take several moments to compose herself. Even He Jiong was so moved he had to dab his tears away with tissue.

JJ then caused a second round of waterworks when he said: “You’ve worked hard.” To which Qin Lan replied that she was just doing her job.

When JJ asked her to look after herself and to eat more, she said, “We try not to eat while on the job because we don’t want to go to the restroom that many times. We eat a lot before and after we get off work because we need to keep up our strength to continue helping others.” She then added that she listens to JJ’s music on the way to work and while going home as a way to boost her own morale, and that she also listens to him every night before she goes to bed.

While the video call might have only lasted for a few minutes, Qin Lan’s optimism, along with JJ’s genuine concern for her and her colleagues who have been tirelessly working to help patients, touched many on the Internet.

One netizen wrote, “Whatever hardships she felt for the past few months probably melted away the moment she saw JJ. Celebs might think that they can’t help at all, but giving a few minutes of their time like this is enough to touch everyone’s hearts.”
