With parents like Hongkong actor Simon Yam and Chinese supermodel Qi Qi, it’s no surprise that Ella Yam has inherited some impressive physical attributes, like her 1.8m height and her reportedly 100cm-long legs. And she only turns 16 this year.
Although Simon once said that he was firmly against letting his baby girl join the tough world of showbiz, Ella’s been racking up an increasingly impressive résumé of commercial and magazine shoots, with her latest one being for Vogue Hong Kong.
However, netizens have expressed their concern over Ella looking thinner and thinner lately. They brought up a photo of Ella posing in front of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore that she posted back in May (see below), pointing out that her ribs are clearly visible and that she had lost fat in her cheeks as well.
According to Hongkong media, there are worries that she is deliberately losing weight in order to appear “better” in photos (as the infamous saying goes, the camera adds 10 pounds), and that the weight loss could affect the 15-year-old’s health and development if she is not getting enough nutrients. Some well-meaning folks also left messages telling Ella to eat more as she would “look better with a little more meat”.
Ella started making headlines when she was around 12 years old. She was already 1.7m tall then and towering over most of her peers — and some adults. While many fashion brands are keen to recruit her as a model, both Simon and Qi Qi, like typical Asian parents, want her to focus on her studies first (although they’re clearly not against letting her pose for spreads every now and then).
Simon’s also known to be a protective father. Once, an interviewer asked if he is ready for his daughter to find a boyfriend, to which he exclaimed, “She’s too young!” However, he denied there being an outright dating ban on Ella.
