Celeb couples have it different from the rest of us. Every move they make is scrutinised from the moment they’re rumoured to be together till when they break up. Just look at the relationship trajectory of Show Luo and Grace Chow, which went from super secret to super sweet to super scandalous over the course of nine years, with every little detail of their romance played out in the public.
However, not every breakup results in a popcorn worthy free-for-all, as demonstrated by Kai Ko and Elva Hsiao. They dated for two years before breaking up in March 2014, and have remained on amicable terms after deciding that being lovers was not for them.
They’ve also moved on with their love lives — Elva is currently dating 25-year-old budding actor Justin Huang, while Kai has been linked to singer Tia Lee and influencer Lillian Chen after their breakup.
Last Thursday, the 29-year-old actor celebrated his birthday on June 18, and took the opportunity to thank his fans through an Instagram post. “Happy birthday to me,” he wrote. “I know everything is not [as] easy [as it seems], but I hope that I’ll be able to soldier on bravely. Thank you for always being there for me.”
He received a flood of messages from his followers, including fellow celebs Oscar Wang and Marcus Chang. One message, however, stood out from the rest. Netizens were surprised to see a comment from Elva, who wrote: “Happy birthday Kai!!! Wish you all the best in the coming year!!!” Kai responded to her comment with the heart eyes emoji, proving that the two are on good terms.
This was a stark difference from the time he slammed Elva in a Facebook post shortly after their breakup. A year after their split, he revealed to the media that they went their separate ways because of his “childish [and] stubborn” actions, and that he had since grown out of his temperamental ways.
Naturally, netizens had a lot to say about the interaction. “I like relationships where you become best friends after you break up,” one mused. Another wrote, “Elva seems to be on good terms with all her exes. She definitely has a high EQ.”
There were some who were not willing to let go of his 2014 drug scandal, with one netizen declaring: “The rest of your life is marred once you do drugs.”
Looks like his dad’s rumoured idea of testing the waters before paying S$2.3mil to stage Kai’s big comeback could be a good one after all.
