Taiwanese actress Shu Qi has been taking an extended break from acting, and has not picked up projects since the movie Shanghai Fortress.
When she announced her break, her ambiguous post on Weibo had many wondering if she was retiring from the industry. “I will be taking a break from acting, thank you for all your love and support, see you soon,” she wrote, which led to numerous questions with no answers on her future in the industry.
The 43-year-old revealed the truth in a recent interview, sharing that she decided to go on an indefinite hiatus in order to focus on her physical and mental health.
She is known to have skin that flares up whenever she is busy or stressed, which caused problems for her when she was working non-stop. However, her condition has since improved after taking some time off.
In addition, she gave a rare insight into the realities of showbiz. Shu Qi mused that finding someone from the industry to confide in is a daunting task. “There are no secrets in showbiz. I don’t expect anything in return when I do something for someone (…) but when I have something on my mind, I’ll ponder on what to do on my own, rather than to tell someone about it.”
When her troubles become overwhelming, the only people that she turns to are her manager and assistants, rather than the fellow celebrities around her.
