Hong Kong actor Simon Yam was attacked by a knife-wielding man while attending an event in Zhongshan, China on July 20. He was rushed to the hospital after the attack, and underwent surgery. He arrived in Hong Kong later that day, where he had a second surgery. His company, Emperor Entertainment Group, has assured that the actor is stable and recovering well.
Videos of the attack circulating the internet showed Simon extending a hand to shake the assailant’s before the man lunged forward. Simon then started running from the man, who was quickly detained by security.
Zhongshan police have shared that the suspect is schizophrenic, and that a fruit knife that was used as a weapon was also found on him.
The 64-year-old actor is reported to have sustained a 2cm wide and 3cm deep injury to his abdomen and wounds on his right hand. The attack is said to have caused minor damage on Simon’s internal organs.
Celebrity manager Mani Fok later shared with Hong Kong reporters that the injury on Simon’s hand might be more serious than was initially reported. She said that his nerves might have been affected, but could not confirm the extent of the injury as his fingers were bandaged when she saw him.
His wife, model Qi Qi, updated her Weibo with a photo of the family holding on to Simon’s hand on July 21 with the caption, “Our family will be with Simon to cheer him on. Thank you for everyone’s well wishes and concern”. Today (July 22), Simon updated his Weibo to assure his fans that he is doing well with a short, “I’m safe. Thank you everyone.”
Simon is still in hospital, and his ward is being guarded by three security personnel at all times and Emperor Entertainment Group has declared that they will foot all related expenses.
