Song Joong Ki might be making his return to the small screen – this time with a historical drama titled Asdal (working title).
The actor’s last leading role in a drama, Descendants of the Sun, caused his popularity to skyrocket as the drama was well received both in South Korea and abroad. Descendants was also his first drama following his discharge from the army. The last period drama that he worked on is Deep Rooted Tree, which aired in 2011.
After news of his wedding to Descendants co-star Song Hye Kyo was confirmed last year, the actor reportedly turned down Netflix drama Kingdom in order to prepare for his nuptials.
Korean media reported that he has received an offer for Asdal, which is written by Kim Young Hyeon and Park Sang Yeon (Deep Rooted Tree, Six Flying Dragons) and directed by Kim Jin Won (Innocent Man). His company, Blossom Entertainment, confirmed that he has received the offer but has yet to make a decision on whether he will be accepting it.
While more details of the drama have yet to be released, some have speculated that it will involve the mythical Gojoseon (Older Joseon) and its capital, Asadal, which is said to be the first Korean kingdom that was founded.
Asdal will be fully pre-produced and is aiming for a 2019 broadcast, with the broadcaster yet to be confirmed.
