With an increasing number of travel restrictions being put in place on a daily basis, people are finding it harder and harder to cross borders, even when it’s for something important.
Take Malaysian-born, Hongkong-based actress Jacqueline Ch’ng for example. She confirmed in February that she filed for marriage with her Taiwanese boyfriend Brian after dating him for less than a year. The 39-year-old’s husband is believed to be the CEO of a bubble tea chain.
Their romance raised eyebrows because the pair dated for only a short time, and that the three months that they spent together before he proposed was mostly spent apart because they're based in different cities.
After news of their marriage made the news, Jacqueline shared that she would not be having a big wedding and that she wanted to keep things simple. And she got her wish, apparently. Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, they decided to go ahead with the ceremony even though both their parents could not travel to Hongkong for it.
But Jacqueline and Brian found a way for both their families to witness their big day on March 15: they FaceTimed them. While the couple's friends were physically present at the ceremony, the bride and groom decided to video call their parents as they didn’t want them to feel left out of the festivities.
In an interview after her wedding, Jacqueline shared this with the media: “It was a very relaxing party and everyone was there to give us their blessings. I’m now a missus but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet, so I don’t feel like anything has changed.”
She added: “I will continue with my showbiz career and my husband will be returning to Taiwan after the ceremony to tend to his business.”
The actress did not reveal plans for where the couple will be settling down. Netizens have also been quick to point out that when she first went public with Brian, who is a year older than her, last September, she was adamant that they would not be rushing into marriage. They found it suspicious that the pair changed their minds so quickly, and wondered if it was because there is a baby on the way.
One netizen wrote: “If it isn’t a shotgun marriage, he might be trying to tie her down. It’s no secret that she’s a millionaire datuk’s daughter, so marrying her will be his ticket to having an easy life from now on.”
