When Taiwanese singer-actress Vivian Hsu got pregnant with her first son, Dalton, in 2015, it caused an onslaught of health problems which she continues to battle until today.

Throughout the years, Vivian has suffered from nasty colds that last up to a month, extreme mood swings and now, heartburn.

The 44-year-old revealed in an IG post that a recent health check-up showed that her previous symptoms of heartburn and throat discomfort were caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, a digestive disorder that occurs when acidic stomach juices flow back up from the stomach and into the esophagus.

Shortly after the diagnosis, Vivian, who got married to Singapore-based Indonesian businessman Sean Lee in 2014, discovered that the cause of her health issues stemmed from her fast-paced, high-stress and unhealthy lifestyle.

When Vivian got hitched, she also became a stepmother to Sean's two daughters, Shasha, 19, and Clara, 16,from his previous marriage. And because she had to take care of Dalton, she’d often stay up late, miss her meals and depend on coffee, at least two cups, as sustenance.

“As a first-time mother, I didn’t dare to relax. I also did not want to give up my acting career which I love very much. I fly a lot every month and try to do well in each role… But because of stress and lack of long-term rest, my body became tense," Vivian wrote.

In order to get her health back on track, Vivian decided to change her lifestyle two weeks ago.

She stopped staying up all night, went to bed early, got up early, ate healthily and drank less coffee. Soon, she felt an improvement in her health.

“After doing this, my body felt better. My mood is better!” Vivian said.

In order to motivate her to keep up her healthy lifestyle, her family arranged for a surprise early birthday party for Vivian, who will be turning 45 on March 19.

Although her two stepdaughters were not present, they had given her a sweet hand-written card.

Clara, who affectionately refers to Vivian as 'V Mother', advised her not to “drink so much coffee”.

“These five years have been tough and stressful for you, so I hope you can get more rest this year! Please don’t drink so much coffee. I know you might really need it on some days, but not everyday. I’m watching!” Clara wrote in her card.

“I’m very proud [to have] you as my mother. You’re not only like a mother, but also like my best friend. That’s why I always feel so comfortable around you,” Clara added. “I’ll always be here to support you, whether it’s at home or when you’re out working. I’ll always be here to help whenever you need any help.”

“I just wanted to thank you for everything you’ve done for me and for us,” her other stepdaughter, Shasha, wrote on her side of the card. “Thank you for always guiding me through [the] different phases of my life and always wanting the best for me, no matter what.”

Touched by her stepdaughters’ words, Vivian wrote: “My daughters are grown up. They’re now mature enough to show concern for my health, it’s time they nag at us!”

"I am very grateful to the heavens for giving me two caring baby daughters. Although V mother is not perfect in many ways, I thank you both for your understanding and love. I also love you," she added.
