The topic of Bruneian heartthrob Wu Chun’s marriage to his wife Lin Liying used to be a bit of a touchy subject for his fans.

You see, even though Wu Chun has no qualms talking about his family now, having appeared on the fifth season of the ultra popular Chinese reality TV show Where Are We Going, Dad? with his two adorable kids, Neinei, nine, and Max, six, that was not the case in 2011.

In 2011, while he was still with Fahrenheit, media outlets started claiming that the heartthrob had secretly filed for marriage with his childhood sweetheart (aka Liying) in 2009.

The rumours were strongly denied by Wu Chun. At one point, he even threatened to sue the magazine who had first published the reports.

Two years later, however, Wu Chun finally spilled the beans, and admitted that he had indeed tied the knot with Liying in 2009.

The controversy over Wu Chun’s marital status eventually died down, only to reignite on March 6, when the 40-year-old wrote a post promoting a new reality show he would be appearing in with Liying.

The show, titled Before Marriage, will chronicle the journey of Wu Chun and Liying as they prepare to hold a wedding ceremony to make up for not having one when they tied the knot all those years ago.

To promote the show, Wu Chun posted an old picture of him and Liying, writing, “A picture that was taken 24 years ago [when we were dating]… Looking back, we’ve really managed to achieve so many things together. I have always been working hard, in order to make up for the one regret [we have]… this dream [of ours]… late last year, she finally agreed to it… now, we’ll have the chance to properly document, and share with everyone [our wedding ceremony]… this is all too fated… this happy journey of ours… grateful [for this opportunity].”

While many fans were excited to see Wu Chun and his wife together onscreen, there were some who did not take the news of Wu Chun’s 2004 marriage well.

As it turns out, Wu Chun had showed the cameras his marriage registration certificate in the trailer, revealing that he had registered his marriage in 2004, not 2009 as he had originally claimed.

The new revelation meant that Wu Chun was already a taken man even before he made his debut with Fahrenheit in 2005.

“I pity your fans... You’ve been lying to people ever since you made your debut. What’s there to hide about your marriage, you even masqueraded as a single man [for so many years],” one commented on Wu Chun’s post.

A day later, a netizen went online to claim that Wu Chun had forced Liying to have a C-section both times she gave birth. The reason? So all their birthdays would match up. In case you don't know, Wu Chun and Neinei were both born on October 10, while Liying and Max were born on October 11.

Liying reportedly lost a lot of blood during both C-sections, and her health was in danger.

In response, Wu Chun’s work studio issued a statement, refuting the claims, and asserting that the rumours were maliciously fabricated.

“The release and spread of these rumours have done great harm to Wu Chun and his wife, and affected them negatively. We strongly condemn these rumour mongers, and reserve all rights to pursue legal action against them,” they wrote.

Wu Chun himself also wrote a post on March 8, thanking everyone for their support, and reinforcing his work studio’s statement.

“I've read many comments over the last two days… I was touched by the comments of many friends, and I have something to share with you guys, from the bottom of my heart… Firstly, I am very grateful to have received so many blessings and concern from everyone. I am also very grateful to have my mum, who [continues to] give me strength from the heavens above, and a blissful family that allows me to face the obstacles ahead with a calm heart,” he wrote.

He then went on to share that the best decision he made in his life was to marry Liying and to start a family with her. He also described his wife and kids as the most beautiful gifts that the heavens have gifted him.

He then credited his fans for giving him the strength to grow and to challenge himself over the years.

Finally, he apologised for wasting public resources and everyone's time with these details of his personal life despite the COVID-19 outbreak.
