The lives of public figures are often considered fair game for intense — and often scornful — scrutiny, and many times, even their young offspring are not spared from criticism.
Just ask Faye Wong’s daughter Li Yan, Vicki Zhao’s daughter April, and Annie Yi’s daughter Milly, all of whom have been the subjects of not-so-nice remarks from netizens, who don't seem to care that they’re only kids.
Well, Apple Wang has had enough. The 14-year-old, who is the eldest daughter of Chinese rocker Wang Feng from his previous relationship with model Ge Huijie and the stepdaughter of his current wife Zhang Ziyi, recently took to Instagram to lambaste a Chinese report that made some pretty far-fetched allegations that were based on some selfies she took.
On February 24, Apple posted a couple of pensive-looking photos of herself without a caption. Instead of taking it at face value (a pretty teenager taking selfies? How scandalous!), one media outlet presented a psychological analysis of her melancholic expressions.
According to the report, Apple is studying overseas and only lives with her grandma, which is why she has developed a “loner” personality. They even brought her “complicated family background” into the equation, claiming that she has had to endure many hardships since she was young, and, as a result, has become "miserable".
This piece of “news” certainly did not sit well with the teen, who slammed it as “pure nonsense” and said that she’s “just so done” with media outlets that are “so eager to create drama”.
That isn't the first time Apple has had to face such rumours.
When Ziyi gave birth to her second child, a son, on New Year’s Day, Apple was criticised for not mentioning anything about it on social media. Even her biological mother has indirectly accused Ziyi and Wang Feng of neglecting Apple and showing favouritism towards their younger daughter Xingxing.
In reality, Apple gets along very well with her dad and stepmum and even makes semi-regular appearances on their respective social media accounts (so what if a girl prefers to be low-key?).
Ziyi also once revealed in an interview that one of her main goals in life is to help Apple have a smooth-sailing journey through adolescence. And let’s not forget that sweet message Ziyi dedicated to Apple on her 14th birthday last year, where she called her “my happy baby”.
